THE Border was awarded The Scotsman’s Fringe First Award 2024 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and received a nomination for The Brighton Fringe Excellence Award 2024.

At first, `The Border` was to be a documentary on Antonina Romanova. The war kept Antonina at the front, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t join us on a later iteration of the performance. My subsequent work on this performance took me to a completely new place, to which I invited Olena Matoshniuk, a painter who supports Ukrainian artists living in Poland. All these happened thanks to Jarosław Fret, who, on hearing Antonina’s story, persuaded me to evoke it, to make it present. `The Border` is about creating a new, intimate language of Those Who Are [Not] Present, a language that is no longer ‘barbed wire’. By saying ‘barbed wire’, I want to evoke the image of a prisoner’s dialogue with the outside world or of a refugee staying behind that wire. We are surrounded by a choir of voices saying that what we want is humanity rather than barbed wire. It  balances on the edge between performance, ritual and ceremony. It becomes a ‘rite of passage’ before our eyes. It opens up a new vista where time is just a moving image of eternity.

Studio Wachowicz / Fret is a creative tandem working since 2021 in the Grotowski Institute in Wroclaw, focusing on the interpenetration of theatre and performance art and the complementarity of the two in each act on stage. Marked by hybridity and openness, the Studio’s works can be called performative installation or séance. Their common denominator is sonority and exceptional focus on sound and vibrations. The Studio often uses tools derived from the tragic tradition rather than the dramatic one, aiming at what the artists describe as intravenous hearing of the world!

La început, „Granița” urma să fie un documentar despre Antonina Romanova. Războiul a ținut-o pe Antonina pe front, dar asta nu a însemnat că nu ni se va alătura într-o iterație ulterioară a spectacolului. Munca mea ulterioară la acest spectacol m-a dus într-un zonă complet nouă, unde am cunoscut-o și invitat-o ​​pe Olena Matoshniuk, o pictoriță care susține artiștii ucraineni care locuiesc în Polonia. Toate acestea s-au întâmplat datorită lui Jarosław Fret, care, auzind povestea Antoninei, m-a convins să o evoc, să o fac prezentă. „Granița” este despre crearea unui limbaj nou, intim, al Celor Care [Nu] Sunt Prezenți, un limbaj care nu mai este precum „sârma ghimpată”. Spunând „sârmă ghimpată”, vreau să evoc imaginea dialogului unui prizonier cu lumea exterioară sau a unui refugiat care stă în spatele acelei sârme. Suntem înconjurați de un cor de voci care spun că ne dorim umanitate, mai degrabă decât sârmă ghimpată. Se balansează la granița dintre spectacol, ritual și ceremonie. Ceea ce vedem devine un „rit de trecere” în fața ochilor noștri… deschide o nouă perspectivă în care timpul este doar o imagine în mișcare a eternității.

Studioul Wachowicz / Fret este un tandem creativ care lucrează din 2021 la Institutul Grotowski din Wrocław, concentrându-se pe întrepătrunderea teatrului cu arta performativă și pe complementaritatea celor două în fiecare act scenic. Marcate de hibriditate și deschidere, lucrările Studioului pot fi numite instalații performative sau ședințe de spiritism. Numitorul lor comun este sonoritatea și concentrarea specială asupra sunetului și vibrațiilor. Studioul folosește adesea instrumente derivate din tradiția tragediei mai degrabă decât din cea dramatică, vizând ceea ce artiștii descriu ca fiind o percepție intravenoasă a lumii!
